I have been a patient at Dr. Orfali’s for over 20 years. He has always been professional and never performs anything that is not needed. I’ve had a couple of crowns and he has done a great job. My adult son was told by a dentist that he had about $5000 worth of work to be done on his mouth. Dr. Orfali reviewed his x-rays and he did not need any work. Sports guards, customized mouth guards, and mouth protectors are different names for the same thing: a device worn over your teeth that protects them from blows to the face and head. Customized mouthguards are an important piece of athletic equipment for anyone participating in a sport that involves falls, body contact, or flying equipment. This includes football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, skateboarding, gymnastics, mountain biking — any activity that might result in an injury to the mouth.
Mouth guards typically cover the upper teeth and are designed to protect against broken teeth, cut lips, and other damage to your mouth. If you wear braces or other fixed dental appliances (such as a bridge) on your lower jaw, your dentist may suggest a mouth protector for these teeth as well. They are also used to prevent teeth grinding and clenching of the jaw. Depending on the need, there are three types of mouth guards:
Stock Mouth guards: They are ready-to-wear devices available at any sports good stores or departmental stores. However, they cannot be a proper fit. They are bulky, making breathing and talking difficult.
Boil-and-bite mouth guards: They are available at sport good stores and are of a better fit than stock mouth guards. These are made up of thermoplastic material. It is placed in warm water to soften and then fit into the mouth using fingers and tongue pressure.
Customized mouth guards: Customized mouthguards are made at the dentist’s office. They are made after taking impressions and fit in the mouth well.
An ideal mouth guard fulfills the following conditions to work effectively
be comfortable yet tight-fitting
allow normal breathing and swallowing
allow normal speech
not cause gagging
be odorless and tasteless
be thick enough to resist the impact

Customized mouthguards protect lips, tongue, and inner lining of the cheeks.
Customized mouthguards prevent damage to bridges and any orthodontic appliances.
While the injuries to teeth are expensive to treat, Customized mouthguards are less expensive compared to them.

You are asked to wear the newly made mouthguard to check if it fits in well. If any changes are needed, they are made and the customized mouth guards are handed over to you.
Customized mouthguards are used to prevent sports injuries.
If you happen to play any sports like football, basketball, hockey (both field and ice hockey), you are eligible to get customized mouthguards regardless of your age.
If you participate in non-contact sports like gymnastics, mountain biking, skateboarding, you can get your set of customized mouthguards.
Some dental insurances cover partial or the entire cost of customized mouthguards crafted by dental professionals. Since health insurance policies keep changing, it is always advisable to check with the insurance companies.
Using mouth guards comes with a responsibility. Dr. Orfaly and his team in Fisher & Orfaly Dental, Salem, MA, advise certain guidelines to follow to look for the hygiene of the mouth guards you use:
Make sure to rinse your mouth guard with water or mouth rinse before and after using the mouth guard.
It can be stored in a perforated case.
Check your mouth guards frequently for any wear and tear. If you find any cracks on the guard, or it no longer fits you well, make sure to replace it.
